From here, you choose your afternoon: a scenic Danube cruise from Spitz to Melk, lunch on deck as the vineyards drift past — or a private table at one of the Wachau's family wineries, where the wine is poured by the people who made it.

The day reaches its crescendo at Melk Abbey, a 1,000-year-old monastery and one of the most magnificent baroque ensembles in Europe. Perched on a rock above the Danube, its golden façades, marble halls, and breathtaking baroque library are part of UNESCO's World Heritage and rank among Austria's most beloved treasures. Your return journey winds gently through the Vienna Woods, the city slowly reappearing on the horizon. Most visitors leave Austria with photographs. You'll leave with the river itself.
