Tour Description
Your private guide will meet you at your hotel, and you will begin the day in a luxury Mercedes limousine, Mercedes van, or Tesla. With large windows and generous space, the journey is designed to be comfortable and enjoyable from the very beginning.
Traveling west from Vienna, you will head toward the Wachau region, one of Austria’s most scenic areas. Your first stop is Krems, a charming wine town where you will enjoy a walk with your guide through its historic streets. Krems offers a lovely first impression of the region and also gives you time to browse and enjoy the local atmosphere.
From there, the journey continues into the Danube Valley itself. One of the highlights of the day is the medieval town of Dürnstein, famous for its connection to King Richard the Lionheart, who was held prisoner there in the 12th century. As you explore the town with your guide, you will see its picturesque streets, the town hall, historic courtyards, traditional wine taverns, and the abbey of St. Augustine with its striking blue tower. If you wish, you may also take the short uphill walk to the castle ruins linked to Richard the Lionheart’s story.
From Dürnstein, the tour offers two different possibilities. One option is to continue to Spitz and board a Danube river cruise to Melk. This scenic cruise takes about one and a half hours and offers beautiful views of the Wachau landscape along the way. You may also enjoy lunch on board while passing vineyards, villages, and castle ruins.
If you prefer not to take the river cruise, we are happy to help arrange lunch at one of the valley’s wineries instead. This offers a more grounded local experience and can be an excellent way to enjoy the Wachau’s wine culture at a relaxed pace.
After lunch, the tour continues to magnificent Melk Abbey, a monastery more than a thousand years old and one of the finest Baroque ensembles in Europe. Dramatically positioned above the Danube, Melk Abbey is one of Austria’s great cultural landmarks and a major highlight of the region. If you wish, an additional private guided visit inside the abbey museum, Marble Hall, and baroque library can also be arranged with one of the monastery’s own guides.
