The Experience
Just forty-five minutes east of Vienna, Austria changes character entirely. The light softens, the vineyards stretch to the horizon, and the rhythm slows to something gentler. Welcome to Burgenland — Austria's sun-drenched wine country, the homeland of Joseph Haydn, and one of the most quietly beautiful regions in Central Europe. Your private driver-guide collects you at your hotel and the journey east unfolds with stories along the way: of princes and composers, of empires and storks, of a landscape UNESCO has chosen to protect.
You begin in Eisenstadt, the elegant capital of Burgenland, at the magnificent Esterházy Palace — the seat of one of Europe's wealthiest noble families and the place where Joseph Haydn spent most of his career as court musician. Inside, your guide leads you through the staterooms and into the resplendent Haydn Room, where many of the composer's masterpieces were premiered for an audience of princes. In the old town you'll see Haydn's former house and the baroque Bergkirche, where the composer himself is entombed. Music, here, is not history. It is still in the air.
Then the day opens onto the lake. Around Neusiedlersee — a UNESCO World Heritage landscape — picturesque hills and vineyards roll past thatched-roof villages, and if the season is right you may glimpse the white nests of Burgenland's beloved storks. Lunch is unhurried, served at a family winery where you'll taste the deep, sun-soaked reds the region is famous for. The day finishes in Rust, a tiny lakeside town whose 16th-century bourgeois houses give its old quarter a beauty entirely its own. By the time your driver returns you to Vienna, you'll feel like you've discovered a side of Austria most travelers never reach. Most visitors leave Austria with photographs. You'll leave with the lake itself. Reserve your private experience — we'll take care of the rest.
Please note: entrance tickets, meals, and wine are not included. We're happy to arrange winery lunches and palace tours on request.
