The Visit

Some places must be remembered — and Mauthausen is one of them. For one full day, your private driver-guide takes you from Vienna into Upper Austria, on a quiet two-hour drive through the Lower Austrian countryside. Along the way, your guide gently sets the historical foundation: how, between 1938 and 1945, Mauthausen became the heart of a system of more than forty sub-camps, and the principal site of political, racial, and social persecution under the National Socialist regime on Austrian soil.

On arrival, you walk the preserved grounds of the former camp with the calm, knowledgeable presence of a private guide who will give you the time and context this place demands. You will see the Wiener-Graben quarry and the Stairs of Death, where prisoners were forced to carry stone blocks weighing up to fifty kilos. You will see the SS quarters, the Camp Prison, and the Gas Chamber. And you will visit the newly reopened Mauthausen Museum, ending in the Room of Names, where the names of the dead are inscribed in quiet rows that stretch further than the eye expects.

Of the roughly 190,000 people imprisoned here, at least 90,000 were murdered. Today, the Mauthausen Memorial stands as one of Europe's most important sites of remembrance — a place to bear witness, to understand, and to honor the lives that were lost. The journey back to Vienna is unhurried, quiet by nature, and time is given for reflection. To visit Mauthausen is not to take a tour. It is to pay respect.
