Jewish Tour of Vienna

Vienna is a city of music and palaces — but it is also a city of memory. Your guide opens a window into a community that, in the 1930s, worshipped in 94 synagogues across the city — and into the singular survivor: the Stadttempel Synagogue, the only one left standing after the war and today the spiritual home of Vienna's Jewish community of around 7,000 members. The walk reaches its quiet, powerful close on Judenplatz, where Rachel Whiteread's stark stone monument stands in memory of the 65,000 Austrian Jews murdered in the Shoah — names hidden inside the walls, books that can never be opened.
